Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel and Casino is holding this week the largest Jackson Family memorabilia auction ever, with more than 1,000 original costumes. Universal purchased the collection from businessman Henry Vaccaro, who acquired it in 2002 from a bankruptcy court auction.
Although Michael Jackson’s attorneys filed a claim to stop the auction, they finally reached a settlement with the current owners of the memorabilia. Items to be sold include a militaristic red coat with gold rope designed by Bill Whitten for Michael Jackson, a contract detailing the purchase of the “Neverland” ranch and a telegram from Marlon Brando encouraging Michael before a show.
“This really is a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence,” Arlan Ettinger, president of auction house Guernsey’s said. “I cannot imagine that somewhere down the road some other collection could come out of the woodwork and rival this. It's not going to happen.” Michael Jackson and his family were invited to attend the auction, however, their presence has not been confirmed.
It has been estimated that the items will be sold for more than 100 million dollars. Ten percent of the proceeds will be donated to several charities.
