Discussion over Toronto Casinos

The allowance of new casinos in the city of Toronto has raised a discussion between supporters, who think new gambling venues would improve the city’s economy, and detractors that believe more slot machines and gaming tables are not the solution.

This month, city councilors approved a $750 million expansion of the Woodbine racetrack and they expect legislators to lift the ban on new casinos and allow table games like craps and roulette. A member of the council said it was time the ban was reviewed so as to come up with the most beneficial answer for the city.

Those who are against the expansion of existing venues and the authorization of new ones, argue that it would just drain off profits from existing casinos and racetracks. Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp., which owns and operates four casinos, two in Niagara, one in Rama and one in Windsor, is already experiencing problems due to cross-border competition and the smoking ban in public places.

Due to the fact that most punters of existing casinos live in the Greater Toronto Area, new gaming facilities are not likely to be approved by legislators at Queen’s Park. However, Toronto city councilors have said they will continue supporting the idea of expanding gambling in the city.
